First Consultation

Your first appointment at Abbey Physiotherapy will typically be a 45-minute consultation, allowing time for a comprehensive assessment and a short treatment in the remaining time.

If you would prefer more time for treatment on this initial appointment, you may wish to book in for 60 minutes.

At Abbey Physiotherapy we treat each client as an individual, your 1st appointment and treatment programme will not be an off-the-shelf package, but a recovery approach that will consider your goals when planning your treatment and rehabilitation.

Our physiotherapists are trained to recognise when physiotherapy is not suitable and can refer you for further investigations privately or request your GP refer you via the NHS.

It is important to us that you understand your condition before we start treatment so please feel comfortable asking questions about your diagnosis and care plan.

Physiotherapy Assessment

During your initial appointment, your physiotherapist will ask a series of questions about your condition. This will be followed by a detailed examination involving some movements and tests that highlight the problem and potential causes of your condition. These findings will then be discussed with you to formulate a personalised treatment plan.

Your assessment will help to map out the nature of your physiotherapy treatment programme, which will take into account your current fitness level, lifestyle, work, any sporting activities and what levels of function you need to attain. This introductory physio assessment enables us to be able to indicate the likely timescale of rehabilitation.

With the remaining time after this, you will be offered a short treatment/self-management advice.

Car Parking

The Pharmacy operates an ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Registration) system. Please ensure that you input your vehicle registration plate into the tablet.
This can be done in the Pharmacy or at the top of the stairs on the 1st Floor.
Doing so will allow you 1.5 hours of free parking It must be entered at each appointment to avoid a fine. If you struggle to do this, then please mention this to our receptionist or physiotherapist and we can do this with you.
Please note – car parking spaces are taken on a 'first come, first served' basis but there are usually plenty of spaces

In order to complete a thorough assessment, we will need to examine the area to be treated. You may, therefore, find it more comfortable to bring a vest top if your condition is with your upper body, or a pair of shorts if you have a lower body condition. Loose-fitting clothes are also a good idea. Please feel free to bring a partner or friend along to accompany you during your visits. Well-behaved children are also welcome but remain your responsibility.

Treatment

Your physiotherapist will discuss possible treatment options with you and decide where to start. This will incorporate your preference for treatments and our recommendations. For example, we may suggest acupuncture but if you have a fear of needles this may not be the best option for you!

Feedback from you is always important as this guides the best approach. It may be that you experience some soreness after treatment, this normally resolves within 24 hours. At each appointment, the Physiotherapist will ask about your response to treatment and adjust your treatment accordingly.

Treatment options may include:

From April 1st 2026
